*******************************************************************
Back to School Night is quickly approaching and will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2021. We look forward to having you visit our school, meet your child’s teachers, and learn more about the classes your child is taking this year! Please review the details below to make the night an enjoyable, successful one for all.
Will Back to School Night be In-Person or Virtual?
Back to School Night will be in person, at Lake Elkhorn Middle School.
Do I need to wear a mask on Back to School Night?
Yes, masks are required at Back to School Night. Howard County Public School System Superintendent, Dr. Martirano, outlined several health and safety updates for the 2021-2022 school year, including that, effective immediately, masks will be required in school buildings for all students, staff and visitors, regardless of vaccination status. Click here for Dr. Martirano’s full statement and more information.
As a reminder, all face masks should be multiple layers. Masks with "vents" are not permitted unless another non-vented mask is worn together with it. Gaiters are not permitted, unless they are doubled over to make two layers, worn with another mask, or have a pocket that holds a filter (and they have a filter).
What time should I arrive?
We suggest you arrive by 5:40 p.m., as the evening will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Parking will be challenging; we suggest that you carpool if possible.
Who should attend?
We know you may be wondering whether or not to bring your child with you. Although he/she may want to attend, we respectfully request that if at all possible, you come to Back to School Night without your child. Space is limited, and we really would like for there to be enough space for folks to move from class to class. Don’t worry about getting lost – staff and student volunteers will be available to help you arrive to your child’s classrooms, so you will not need to bring your student to help guide you. You will also receive a map of the school to help you find your way to classes. Thank you in advance - we appreciate your support!
What should I bring?
We encourage you to bring a copy of your child's schedule with you. We suggest you take a picture of your child's schedule or download it from Synergy, especially if more than one adult will be attending, However, if you forget to bring a copy, your child’s schedule will be waiting for you in his/her Eagle Nest (homeroom).
You may also want to bring something so that you can take notes, if needed.
What should I do when I arrive?
When you arrive, please proceed to the cafeteria. We will gather there for a presentation, starting at 6:00 p.m., before moving to your child’s Eagle Nest (homeroom); click here for our 2021-2022 Eagle Nest lists (please be sure to look under the proper grade for your child’s last name). Once you arrive to your child’s Eagle Nest, you will receive his/her schedule.
If for some reason you are running late, schedules will be moved to a help desk in the atrium at 6:40 p.m. Please note: There could be a wait to get your child's schedule if you arrive after the Eagle Nest time, so we encourage you to arrive in time for your child's Eagle Nest or that you bring a copy of your child's schedule with you.
What is the schedule for the evening?
The evening will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria and will end at 7:52 p.m.
After the large group meeting in the cafeteria, you will move to your child’s Eagle Nest where you will pick up your child’s schedule, a school map, and the bell schedule for the evening. Classes will be 7 minutes in length with a 3-minute transition time between classes. A more detailed schedule is included below.
I need help with Canvas and the Family File. Will there be support offered on Back-to-School-Night?
Mr. Howse, our media specialist, will be available for anyone who needs support with Canvas and/or the Family File. He will be located in the media center, and will be available throughout Back to School Night, so be sure to stop by!
What else can I expect?
Attending Back to School Night is an exciting time for parents, teachers and staff! Our students also look forward to having their parents/guardians visit the school to see their classrooms and meet their teachers. We look forward to having you visit our school, and we are excited that you will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classrooms and listen to a presentation from the professionals who teach them. We respectfully request that you refrain from recording or photographing the presentations.
Our staff members will have a brief amount of time to share the information they feel is the most important for you to know. Because time is limited, there is not time for individual conversations or conferences with teachers. If there is something that you would like to address with a teacher, we want to give you the time and attention you deserve which cannot be achieved on Back to School Night. If this is the case, we respectfully request that you either contact the teacher directly or that you contact the student services office to arrange for a conference.
We look forward to seeing you Wednesday, September 8!
